Por do Sol
The first impression from the house "Por do Sol", in
Faja da Ovelha, is the magnificent and panoramic sea view. Every
night, if you wish, you can watch the sunset theatre ("por
do sol") from the roofed veranda.
Situated on the hillside below the small village church, the house
has a beautiful view and enjoys sun throughout the day. 22 steps
down from the quiet road is the entrance of "Por do Sol".
Faja da Ovelha itself is a quiet village in the tranquil west
of the island. Instead of hotels or discos, there are farmhouses,
goats, chickens
. and much silence and serenity!
The renovation of this old Madeirense house was completed in February
2003. Warm colours and wooden panels contribute to the cosy atmosphere.
On the ground floor there is a spacious well equipped kitchen,
living room (with hifi-stereo set) and one bathroom. Upstairs
there are two bedrooms, each with a double bed, and the second
bathroom. In front of the house, down the hill, there is a garden
with a small lawn. Apricot and papaya trees, as well as the lovely
bougainvilleas, lend a mediterranean air to this delightful place.
A barbecue corner invites you to grill your own "espada"
or "sardinhas" which can be bought fresh from the fisherman's
van that comes in the mornings.
The nearest restaurant is about half a mile away. In the neighbouring
villages of Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar there are further restaurants.
Here you can take a bath in the ocean from the pebbled beaches.
In Faja da Ovelha there is a "minimarket". A bigger
supermarket, pharmacy, banks and post office etc. can be found
in Calheta, which is about 15 minutes away by car. In Calheta
you can use the (artificial) sandy beach for a swim in the ocean.
