Porto Santo Quinta Rosario

Porto Santo is the small neighbouring island to Madeira, situated ca. 40 km northeast.
The volcanic origin you will make out here easier than on the green Madeira. During midsummer lots of Madeirans spend their holidays on Porto Santo. Then the long sandy beach is crowded over by lively and extended families. During the remaining months of the year, things are pretty calm and leasurely on the "golden island", at constantly pleasant temperatures.
Good long strolls along the sea accompanied by the roar of the breakers, impressive walking and biking tours across the island and the stimulating silence of a secluded old estate that was provided with individual holiday apartments slow down considerably the modern speed of life and give new energy.
Quinta Rosario comprises in all 150.000 sq.m of land. The great-grandparents of Dona Joana have established the mannor house and stables in 1837. Formerly on the farm wheat and barley was reeped and digested. The estate is in a peaceful valley in the interior of the island. The car takes ten minutes to drive from the port/beach. Alternatively the bicycle needs at least 40 minutes, for the street goes across a 150 m high pass.
The manor house Rosario accommodates couples, groups or families. It is built at ground level and in the way of a U. There are two wings and the 14 m long connecting building. The court in between comprises of 60 sq.m. Each wing contains one holiday apartment: Casa do Avo (Grandpa's home) and Casa da Mae (Mum's home). The connecting building contains a large kitchen-cum-living-room and a lounge. The furniture of all Quinta Rosario is antique and simple.

Casa do Avo
On 35 sq.m there are a bedroom with double bed, wardrobe and adjoinig bathroom (shower) as well as a livingroom with kitchenette, traditonal oven, sofa bed and a small dining table that can be wheeled out onto the court. Casa do Avo fits for two people and costs 40 euros per night (July - September 50 euros). No extras.
Tow other persons find a small bedroom with single beds and a bathroom (shower) on the wing's back.
Renting Casa do Avo you have free access to the large kitchen-cum-living-rom and lounge in the connecting building . Free access have the guests in Casa da Mae, too, when staying there at the same time. Except the peak season (July - September) Quinta Rosario is hardly booked. You can count on your privacy in all probability.

Casa da Mae
The opposite wing contains two bedrooms (each ca. 15 sq.m large) with a (shower) bathroom each. Every bedroom has two single beds and a wardrobe. To cook, eat and stay is the court as well as the large kitchen-cum-living-room and the lounge of the connecting building. If rented at the same time, the guests of Casa do Avo have free access there, too. Except the peak season (July - September) Quinta Rosario is hardly booked. You can count on your privacy in all probability.
The price of Casa da Mae is 40 euros per night for two persons and 60 euros for four people (50 euros resp. 80 euros July - September). No extras.

Planning a group travel: There are further accomodations for ten more persons in Quinta Rosario. Please ask for more information.

On the slopes of the estate area there are small footpaths. The owner, Dona Joana, has begun to plant pines and cypresses there to protect the soil against erosion. Near the houses you find some palm trees, a pomegranate tree, olive trees, acacias, and box trees. The barbecue and washing machine are accessible to all guest. Garden furniture, bed linen and towels are provided.

The slopes that surround Quinta Rosario are green during the winter and brownish in summer time. A romantic bay (with flint stones) is to be reached within a stroll of ten minutes.
